TNS is continually reviewing its product and service offerings to ensure that they are technologically advanced as well as robust and supportable. This process involves announcing new products and services and discontinuing older products and services that no longer satisfy these criteria.
New eight-digit-only Centrex phone service dialing at University Park:
January 25, 2017
Beginning Feb. 1, five-digit dialing will no longer be supported for Centrex phones at Penn State University Park. As a result, students, faculty and staff members who use Centrex phone services — typically used for some fax machines and residence hall courtesy phones — will need to dial “8” plus a seven-digit phone number for calls and faxes to other University Park numbers and within the 814 area code. ITS Firewall Service is Ending Support for Check Point Firewall Appliances:

The ITS Firewall Service support lifecycle is directly mapped to Check Point’s appliance support lifecycle policy. Check Point published an End-of-Support date of December 31, 2018 for the following firewalls:
ITS recommends that all University departments using these particular firewall models begin budgeting for life cycle replacements.

VoIP Set End of Service Phase 2: October 12, 2015
Penn State’s Telecommunications and Networking Services (TNS) has announced that manufacture support of select VoIP telephone models ended as of June 30, 2015. As a result, the voice services on these unsupported devices may experience partial or complete failure in the near future.
Newer telephone models are available through TNS for a one-time cost or a low monthly rental fee. To receive a replacement model, administrative units and departments may contact TNS at 814-865-1696 or visit the PSU Service Portal.
Campus Usage Rating Application End of Service: February 26, 2016
Penn State’s Telecommunications and Networking Services (TNS) will end support of the Campus Usage Rating Application on 2/26/2016 due to lack of need. Note that this application became the primary tool for campus usage rating and reporting in May 2015 with the upgrade of the TNS billing system. If usage rating should again become necessary at campus locations, third-party providers (such as Microcall utilized by PS Berks) are available.

Support for 100 Mbps Integrated Backbone Services Extended: June 30, 2013
Information Technology Services has extended the support of existing 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) backbone connections from June 30, 2011 to June 30, 2013. Due to recent University budgetary pressures, which have delayed the installation of facility upgrades, the requirement to upgrade current 100 Mbps networks to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) networks has been postponed by two more fiscal years than previously announced. Requests made at all campuses for backbone connections less than Gigabit speeds will be honored through June 30, 2011 only. Any new 100 Mbps Ethernet connections to be installed must be ordered by that date. After June 30, 2011, all new backbone connections will be based upon Gigabit or higher speeds.
